TAPPS Regional Playoff

Fri Nov 17

11AM

AT Shipman Field

Heritage   58

Bryan St Joseph   62

On the game tonight

St Joseph had to earn the win. We dug a bit of a hole in the first half and came storming back in the second half. I was proud of the heart, fight, guts and grit that our team showed. These guys have done that all year. We all hurt after a tough loss like this.

Heritage took the lead 58-54 with about 1 minute left on the clock. St. Joseph scored on a 20 yard pass with 2 seconds to play.

This was a winnable game. We had some critical breakdowns in the first half. This team is resilient and it showed tonight. We gave ourselves a shot to win in the 4th quarter but just fell short. This group of guys know that their self worth is not in a scoreboard but it still hurts.

On the season

The season didn’t go exactly as we planned but rarely does it.  We know that we were on the journey that God wanted us to be on and we find some satisfaction in that.  We are as competitive-minded as they come and so we are disappointed we didn’t reach some of our goals this year, namely a district and State Title.  However, these guys grew, learned more about the game, themselves their team mates and developed tools that they will use for the rest of their life.

On the two seniors Tres and Tristan

Both of these young men have been a part of this program for the past 7 years and beyond if you throw in the years that they were managers. These two young men bleed green and it has been a joy to coach them. They are loyal, steadfast and have grown into the kind of Christian servant-leaders that we need in this crazy world. The beautiful part of coaching is that the relationships you build and the memories you make will last for as long as we are on this earth. Both Tres and Tristan have had very successful careers as Heritage football players. They have been there through the thick and the thin. We are going to miss them on the football field but we are excited to see what God does in their lives as they complete their senior year, graduate and move to the next season of their life after High School.

TAPPS AREA Playoff

Saturday Nov 11

11AM

AT Shipman Field

Heritage  48

Vs.

Missouri City Divine Savior  26

Heritage advances to the Regional Playoff

On the game vs Divine Savior:

This was a solid football team we played as it should be come playoff time.  Our team played discipline hard nosed physical football.  Missouri City is known for their downhill running attack and we matched it to a point that we forced them into a spread passing game.  I was very proud of the way our guys handled the entire week.  We are a small school and our varsity volleyball team advanced to the Tapps State volleyball tournament Thursday and Friday.  The team went to Waco and supported their fellow classmates.  The football team came back Friday night, refocused their attention on the Saturday football playoff and played very well.  This requires a lot of solid character, perseverance and leadership on their part.

On the flow of the game

Credit has to go to Missouri City on how they just wouldn’t let us close the door on them until late in the game.  I have to give even more credit to our guys as every time Missouri City threw a punch we answered with a solid counter.  This happened multiple times during the course of the game and Heritage showed resilience, steadfastness and fortitude around every corner.

On advancing in the playoffs

At this time of year it is find a way to win and advance.  We are coming together at just the right time.  These guys have battled through a tough non district schedule.  We experienced the hard loss vs San Marcos and responded with a determination to work even harder.  They have worked even harder and the improvement is showing.  We are peaking at the right time and playing our best football.

On the Regional Playoff vs Bryan St. Joseph Academy

We will certainly go into this game as the underdogs.  Fine by us.  St Joseph offers a really good passing attack and it will take everything we have learned and grown in to slow it down.  They have a good passing spreadback with good receivers.  Discipline, fundamentals and taking care of the football will be key.  We are ready for the challenge and going to leave it all on the field.  I love our team and their work ethic.  We are a band of brothers.
